This is one of the more successful realistic pieces I've done. I was having a ton of fun doing the face patterning in the fur... I'd never done a realistically patterned wolf before, and the complexity of their natural coloration is really quite amazing. I also like that she looks gentle.. because I feel that wolves are portrayed as angry or mean most of the time when theyre probably not. I didnt want background to interfere with this one, so I painted a salted watercolor background...
WOW i could swear if i move my head the furr moves! probably just my laptop screen but still the detail is AMAZING again.
wolves really are wonderful animals. her face looks almost welcoming, cant quite place it

What I do is I take regular old salt - (i have one of those 26oz cylinders with the metal pour-top) you dont need any fancy salt just regular iodized salt works fine.. and while the watercolors are still very wet, you sprinkle the salt on. What the salt does is it absorbs some of the water, and some of the color with it, leaving patterns of whitish spots. You dont want to remove the salt grains until the watercolor has fully dried, though, or else the pattern wont set. When dry, brush off salt.
I like the paws, the way they are kinda big, but they look so soft and lovely, with her mane makes her looks fluffy and soft, but somehow still wild like ^^

I'm curious about how you do the salted watercolor background. I haven't figured out how to do that yet (or atleast be brave enough to try...)
